Can You Sterilise Handpieces In An Autoclave?

There’s a myth floating around that “handpieces can’t go in an autoclave.” That’s not only false — it’s dangerous.

If you’re not autoclaving handpieces between patients, you’re exposing them to cross-contamination risks that can lead to infection, legal action, and license issues.

But — you can’t just toss them in like a mirror. They need care, prep, and the right cycle to avoid internal damage.

Why Sterilising Handpieces Is Non-Negotiable

Even if your handpiece tip looks clean, the internal drive system can harbour biofilm, blood, and saliva. Running it under cold water or soaking it in disinfectant doesn’t cut it. Autoclaving is the only approved method.

Autoclaving Handpieces: Step-by-Step

  1. Remove the handpiece from hose or motor
  2. Clean externally with a cloth and warm water
  3. Lubricate using manufacturer-recommended oil
  4. Pouch the handpiece in a Class B compatible steam pouch
  5. Load upright in your autoclave using a handpiece rack
  6. Run a “wrapped” vacuum cycle on a Class B autoclave
  7. Allow full drying and cooling before removing

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Autoclaving without cleaning or lubrication
  • Using incorrect oil (can burn during cycle)
  • Running handpieces on solid or unwrapped cycle
  • Pouching while still wet or hot
  • Not allowing full drying (causes internal rust)

Does Every Handpiece Need a Specific Cycle?

Some advanced handpieces have temperature sensitivity, so always check:

  • Manufacturer’s sterilisation instructions
  • Max temperature rating (usually 134°C)
  • Whether pre-vacuum cycles are safe for that model

When in doubt, use a 134°C vacuum cycle, minimum 3 minutes sterilisation time, and full drying.

How to Tell If Your Handpiece Is Autoclave Safe

  • Look for an autoclave symbol (three steam lines) on the packaging
  • Check the user manual
  • Review warranty terms for heat damage exclusions
